THE SITE AND ITS CHALLENGES

This property had a large but overgrown garden that needed to be cleared to allow a base to be laid. There was also a dead tree that had to be felled and it’s trunk and root system removed.

The existing oak tree offered shade in the afternoon, but with full sun during the day, the balance of the design needed to allow enough light in but also ability to block sunlight for any studio shoots.

The circular windows are unusual, probably because fitting them is never straight forward, but they really do give this simple box shape a real unique lift.

The garden was a free project which allowed plenty of scope to offer local landscaping solutions to make the building blend into its surroundings.

IDEAS AND CONCEPTS

Meeting the client it became clear they were open to all sorts of creative options, but they really wanted to make sure the space was useable and not compromised by the design.

We went away and explored a few options that after discussion, developed into our final solution.

THE HUG SOLUTION

A simple box – anything but.

We designed the exterior with circular windows on two sides to mimic the lens of a camera. We then used cedar cladding that would gradually age to a lovely dusty grey and again reflect the old box camera feel of our final design. White render was used around the round windows to break up the design and create that porthole effect.

The garden around the studio garden room was landscaped with simple planting and pebbles which gave it a more beach hut feeling (something the client had mentioned in the initial brief).

Internally, the building was left empty with power points in every corner of the room, plus small led lights for inside. Lighting was also included for the external of the building and security.

A Studio Garden Room for creativity

A simple space to work and adapt as time goes on and the family and business grows, this studio garden room offers lots of creative possibilities. From inspiration found within the surroundings and garden itself, to the flexibility inside to create a studio and workspace all of your own.

As the client was a photographer we really enjoyed the thought of the client walking to his studio garden room and entering his very own camera to start work each day.

MY HUG

“Anyone who see’s my HUG immediately wants to know who created it. They love the look and feel of it and it’s practical size. We have used it for work, parties, BBQ’s and the odd cinema night too. And for work it has been the best thing I ever did. My own separate space to create images and work from home has been such a blessing. I would definitely recommend HUG, they really listened to me and what I wanted and gave me something really special”.
